This year's NECC did not disappoint. Besides the massive exhibition hall with over 500 vendors shouting about their newest and greatest, there were literally hundreds and hundreds of sessions, round tables, poster tables, and more to view. Steve, Donetta, and I spoke about the long time it took for each of us to just narrow down the field to the sessions that we felt would be best for the district. To review the program in detail, check out - http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/NECC2009/program/search.php. I have written separately about most of the sessions I attended in this blog, so I won't go over those again, but I will share some goodies that I think are worth further investigation this year:

Thinkfinity from Verizon (Free) - http://www.thinkfinity.org - excellent interactive activities and lesson plans for teachers to use in the classroom. Very dynamic, searchable, and connected to standards.

Google Apps for Schools (Free) - http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/index.html - allows the district to base email and other apps for staff off of the Google tools -- for free. Allows each staff member to have 2 GB of space online, enhanced web-based email, and collaborative documents.

Clicker 5 (Cost) - http://www.cricksoft.com/UK/products/clicker/ - is a cross-platform program that helps pre-rereading / pre-writing students to put together ideas and words to write stories. This looks exciting for our PreK and Kindergarten classes to replace some of the older programs that no longer are being supported. Can also be used with more sophisticated content. To find out more, check out - http://www.cricksoft.com/uk/ideas/using_clicker/index.htm.

Library of Congress' Website (Free) - http://www.loc.gov/teachers/ - one of the best experiences from the conference was a free pass to visit the Library of Congress for a closed evening event. We were treated like royalty with free drinks and desserts as well as free access to the main reading room at the Thomas Jefferson Building. This room is only available to the public about twice a year so we truly were treated as honored guests. There are so many resources available for students and educators at the Library of Congress and even if you have checked out the site in the past, you should take another look.

Here is a picture from the Main Reading Room:

For more pictures from Washington, DC, check out my photo website at http://picasaweb.google.com/lhillclasses/WashingtonDC#.

21st-Century Learning: The New Visionary Administrator Speaks Up!

The CEO of Project Tomorrow (the non-profit organization that runs the national survey of students, teachers, parents, and admininstrators called "Speak UP!") shared the responses of the Fall 2008 survey with a focus on responses of visionary leaders. From the 2008 Fall survey, Project Tomorrow discovered from the data that there is a growing cadre of visionary leaders whose technology skills and goals are more closely aligned with their students than with their teachers. To view the report, click this link - http://www.tomorrow.org/speakup/leadership21_visionaryAdmin.html. Knowledgeable and persistent leadership is key for success and the new national educational technology standards for administrators (NETS-A) details the characteristics necessary. The new ISTE NETS-A sections are (ISTE, 2009):

1. Visionary Leadership
2. Digital Age Learning Culture
3. Excellence in Professional Practice
4. Systemic Improvement
5. Digital Citizenship

The first standard focuses on leadership that nutures effective and positive change. Leaders who cannot affect change positively will not survive. Digital Age Learning Culture (Standard 2), focuses on leaders' ability to model, promote, and support "rigorous, relevant, and engaging education for all students" (ISTE, 2009).
References

ISTE. (2009). National Educational Technology Standards. So often, as a technology director, so much of the time is gobbled up with the details of supporting the technology equipment, providing professional development, and dealing with mandates / requirements. Although these leeches are essential aspects of leading educational technology, the focus needs to be on finding ways to nurture student AND teacher learning.

Chris O'Neal, one of the presenters, recommended that it is best to find a tangible task and bring it back to motivate a change. Perhaps find a way to have your building administrators actually give technology trainings to their staff.

eToolKit - http://www.etoolkit.org - Web 2.0 tools and resources are on this website.

The toolkit has resources on data gathering and information such as surveys and data collection assessments. information also includes Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is the overlay of technology, content, and pedagogy. Additionally, there are many tips on how to get policymakers behind your vision. Overall, this website provides constantly-updated resources to support movement towards the new / updated version of school. Great use for posting to a class blog -- have students come up individually each day and record what happened during class that day.

Jing - http://www.jingproject.com and Skitch (best for Mac) - download the program to then capture screen shots, but instead of just sitting in the clipboard, you can annotate and do so much more. Additionally, this will record your voice and mouse movement. You can also move to Screencast which allows you to embed your video /image or download.

Similar Keepvid - http://www.keepvid.com - which allows you to harvest YouTube videos, KickYouTube helps teachers to download videos to bring into school. When you find the YouTube video on YouTube, in the address bar, just add "kick" before the word "youtube." Then you will be able to download it various formats. This is a huge advancement in working around streaming issues. No downloading, no fees, no extra links.

CoolTools - http://www.cooltools.net - has a Random Name generator http://classtools.net/main_area/template_loader.php/?fruit_machine that pulls up invidual names one by one for students to answer a question... You can use this when you are asking students to review facts as well if you enter the facts in the text box and then "pull the lever" to see which fact comes up for the student to answer. Another option is that you can embed this tool into your blog.

Too much on my desktop!

Here is a test!

I have been having freezing and hanging problems on Interent Explorer on my PC. I was googling a bit early this Saturday morning and I discovered some sites that were just awesome.

Google Maps - http://maps.google.com

Mappr - http://www.mappr.com - Mappr takes the tags that users submit with their photographs that they post online to Flickr (http://www.flickr.com). Mappr then shows the photographs on a map so you can search by a location. Currently, they are using zipcodes and place names, but they are working on including longitude and latitude. Nat at O'Reilly Radar has gathered some powerful web sites and tools that are focused on images, tagging by location, and more (http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2005/07/where_20_a_coll.html). Here is a cheat sheet for adding tags that tie in longitude and latitude from Phillip Torrone (http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/07/how_to_gps_tag.html).

NJ Elite 2005 - Engaging the Digital Mindset

Open-Source Software Resource Information

Open-source software is exploding all over the educational world and for very good reason. Based on reality, relevant research, and best practices, conventional wisdom will be challenged.

To access the full handout, go to: http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/uploads/NECC2005/KEY_7480354/Freitas_buckenmeyerNECC2005.pdf

According to Freitas and Buckenmeyer (2005), they reveal the following point / counterpoint about the future of technology in education:

Issue 4: The Future
Point
Technology integration is another educational fad. It’s an initiative doomed for failure. When student achievement stagnates or declines, a lack of technology support will likely be blamed. Under the No Child Left Behind Act, fortunately no excuses are acceptable.

Counterpoint
It must be acknowledged that a similar argument was made concerning other technologies, most recently and notably television. Some “research” studies at that time referred to this new invention as insignificant. Proponents, however, envisioned the education’s future through this new media. They argued that since the teacher in the box (television) was every bit as good as the teacher in the classroom, teachers could be replaced with the televised teacher at significant cost savings. Fortunately, this theory quickly short circuited. Few can argue the fact that the effects of computer and related technologies are pervasive and far-reaching. Such technologies are rapidly changing and affect every area in which we live, work, and play. Our graduates are expected to be comfortable and proficient with technology. If schools don’t prepare students to enter the workforce, aren’t they ignoring an important societal expectation? Accountability is one of the cornerstones of the No Child Left Behind Act. Now, the rising student achievement rates of every school, or lack thereof, is publicly shared. Success and failure will be analyzed. What role did technology play? This examination will likely yield more evidence of the link between technology and student achievement. (Feritas & Buckenmeyer, 2005, pp. 11-12)

Lara's Comments
First of all, the budget for next year sent by President Bush completely wiped away all funding for the EETT portion of the No Child Left Behind Act. Unless Congress puts money back in to fund educational technology, then educational technology advocates will declare that failure will be inevitable. Money is not everything, but it is necessary when upgrading school districts to be part of the digital world that is already in place outside of schools.

I would take this even further to state that educational technology when infused responsibly in to the curriculum and productivity of schools will not only help to meet the societal expectation, but also transform the depth of learning. Throughout the NECC 2005 conference, it is evident that educational technology is not about the business of bringing in gadgets that are fads, it is about empowering people - students, faculty, staff, parents, community members - to reach out to the macro and micro world in which they are a part. Weinberger (2005) in his keynote presentation at NECC 2005 addresses just this issue. He asserts that the individual's role in society is greatly expanded by the use of technology such as blogging, podcasting, etc. Evidence of this is seen through the dramatic example of Dan Rather of CBS News who was called on the carpet by a blogger. Individuals can now speak to a vast audience instead of just the confines of their community. Weinberger (2005) goes further to say that knowledge itself has been transformed (for more information, access Weinberger's site at http://www.hyperorg.com/).Today's students will be faced with a world that is more complex than the one that we currently reign within. Educational technology allows students in school now to move past the memorization of rote materials such as the periodic table and in to the ways that those elements can interact in a purposeful way to create something new and wonderful. Educational Technology is society's greatest hope for reaching towards the empowerment of all memebers of society to reach their fullest potential.

Lara

<c>References</>

Freitas, D., & Buckenmeyer, J. He breaks down the problems with creating web quests, the skills needed (both techonlogical and pedagogical). He is posting his PowerPoint. There is a webcast of this session as well - http://www.kidzonline.org/necc/agenda.html.

I wonder about the ways that teachers and students can create web quests that they like and that they created in a library. It would be wonderful to have an easier system for filling out the forms for creating web quests. My thought for our use of web quests is to use Word to create the web quest, find a mechanism for easily saving the links to pictures for the link and then the ability to zip and post to Edline as a web site that it will automatically unload. We need to investigate this further.

NECC - Resource - Vocabulary Site

Vocabulary University at http://www.vocabulary.com has a rich site that is free with games and learning tools for increasing vocabulary. - price is about $50,000
- Gatekeepers
- hardware
- not necessary for IP to IP
- Codecs
- these do the decoding and encoding
- these are part of the camera usually
- Software Systems for Videoconferencing
- allows for more computer tools
- Whiteboard, remote desktop, chat
- Quality is not as high because of the applications
- Lots of variety of commercial meeting points available
- SIP (Session Initiated Protocol
- MPEG4 and more

IP Issues
- Cannot do multiple videos unless you have MCU
- you can purchase a switch that allows you to have multiple cameras and then just switch back and forth

Network Considerations
- Hubs - video and audio packets can't wait
- Network speeds at least 10/100 network
- Switches - consider congestion - how are they being used
- Routers - quality of service, memory, processing speed and congestion
- If you have a bandwidth problem, quality of service is poor, minimum bandwidth should be at least 512K for only video
- Bandwidth monitoring tools

Firewalls
- Source of greatest configuration problems because they do their job
- Private IP address - Static Public to Private
- Newer firewalls include video and audio packet service
- Firewall transversal systems (Ridgeway as an examle)

Troubleshooting
- Keep cell phone numbers handy
- Call test number to make sure it is not you
- Isolate the problem
- On network or off network
- Use common network tools - ping, trace route, bandwidth monitors
- Packet loss and jitter
- Always have plan B, C, D, etc. - Redundancy is important
- Include in extra time
- Use technology troubles to teach students and others critical thinking skills and technology skills by modeling and explaining details.

Ideas for Haddon Township School District
- Camnet has a gateway
- We have IP conferencing - that is just fine now.
- Colleges have MCUs, gateways, and gatekeepers - we might be able to use these during the day if we make a connection.
- We need to get network monitoring software
- MRTG - bandwidth monitoring -
- Ethereal - network analyzer
- Iperf - Network analyzer -

NECC - Live from the Heart Video Conferencing Program

During the IP Video Conference workshop that I attended on June 27, 2005 at the NECC, we saw a demonstration of a live open-heart operation. The program is from the Museum of Science and Technology in Chicago, IL. The web site is http://www.msi.org.

The web site is wonderful! Filled with lots of resources. The teachers attends a 2.5 hour prof development program that allows them to experience the surgery and understand the process of the lesson. The students receive journals to complete before and during the program. The surgeons and nurses are connected to mics and there are cameras in the operating room. The cost is $240 for the entire event with the educational materials. The program is for 8th - 12th graders, mostly 11th - 12th graders. The program fills up very quickly. type='text'>Pew Internet & American Life Project: The Digital Disconnect

The Digital Disconnect: The widening gap between Internet-savvy students and their schools

8/14/2002 | Report | Doug Levin, Sousan Arafeh, Amanda Lenhart, Lee Rainie

Using the Internet is the norm for today’s youth. Due in large part to high profile and sometime controversial education technology public policy initiatives, it is conventional wisdom that much of this use occurs in schools. The American Institutes for Research was commissioned by the Pew Internet & American Life Project to conduct a qualitative study of the attitudes and behaviors of Internet-using public middle and high school students drawn from across the country. The study is based primarily on information gathered from 14 gender-balanced, racially diverse focus groups of 136 students, drawn from 36 different schools.

Internet-savvy students rely on the Internet to help them do their schoolwork. They describe dozens of different education-related uses of the Internet. Virtually all use the Internet to do research to help them write papers or complete class work or homework assignments. The students employ five different metaphors to explain how they use the Internet for school: The Internet as virtual textbook and reference library, as virtual tutor and study shortcut, as virtual study group, as virtual guidance counselor, and the Internet as virtual locker, backpack, and notebook.

Many schools and teachers have not yet recognized—much less responded to—the new ways students communicate and access information over the Internet. Students report that there is a substantial disconnect between how they use the Internet for school and how they use the Internet during the school day and under teacher direction. For the most part, students’ educational use of the Internet occurs outside of the school day, outside of the school building, outside the direction of their teachers. While there are a variety of pressures, concerns, and outright challenges in providing Internet access to teachers and students at school, students perceive this disconnect to be the result of school administrators setting the tone for use at school, the wide variation in teacher policies regarding Internet use in and for class and poor and uninspiring quality of Internet-based assignments. Students say they face several roadblocks when it comes to using the Internet at schools. In many cases, these roadblocks discourage them from using the Internet as much, or as creatively, as they would like. They note that quality of access, heavy-handed filtering and the inequalities in home access among students constitute major barriers to Internet use in and for school.

Of course, student use of the Internet for school does not occur in a vacuum. Students’ experiences, and those of their states, districts, schools, teachers, and parents, strongly affect how the Internet is adopted in schools. Nonetheless, large numbers of students say they are changing because of their out-of-school use of the Internet—and their reliance on it. Internet-savvy students are coming to school with different expectations, different skills, and access to different resources.

Stated Educational Technology Director's Association

Toolkit for 2003 - Tons of information about technology leadership.

About the National Leadership Institute (NLI)
On December 6-10, 2003, SETDA hosted the second annual National Leadership Institute (NLI). The NLI was developed in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education. Participation at the NLI included more than 105 state leaders from 46 states and the District of Columbia. There were also 10 staff members from the U.S. Department of Education, more than 25 resource specialists and directors from six of the Regional Technology in Education Consortia (R*TEC).

The NLI was an intensive hands-on workshop structured to produce deliverables that will aid state technology leaders in effectively implementing the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. A planning committee comprised of SETDA members developed the work group topics and the Institute's agenda to ensure relevant and significant areas of focus.

Each Institute participant selected one of the following work groups.

Group One: Building Partnerships & Leveraging Resources
Group Two: Technology Leadership Skills for 21st Century Challenges
Group Three: Data Collection/Data Driven Decision-Making
Group Four: Professional Development Models/On-Line Learning
Group Five: Virtual Schools/Distance Learning

The outcomes of the five work groups are included in the 2003 SETDA National Leadership Institute Toolkit: States Helping States Implement No Child Left Behind. While the Toolkit was developed for use by state leaders, SETDA does encourage sharing the tools broadly so that all educators and administrators can utilize the Toolkit to assist them in improving learning for all students through the use of technology. Additional copies of the Toolkit can be downloaded at www.setda.org.

Presentation about Teenage use of Internet and the Implications for Education and the Future

http://www.pewinternet.org/ppt/2003%208.14.03%20--%20Singapore%20Youth.Net%20Conference.ppt#258,1,Teenage Life Online: The Rise of the Networked Generation Lee Rainie – Director Youth.Net Conference - We are unable to log in to the Mac OS X Server X.3.4, eventhough we have Windows Services on and the Mac OS X Server is set up as the PDC.

I found the following helpful discussions:

- http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@206.RzcIaN89vNW.7@.68998011/0 - discusses how to do it:
"On your server, configure Windows services as a PDC (Primary Domain Controller) and define a domain.

At your PC, logon as as administrator and go to Network Neighborhood and see if you can see the domain. If you can, you need to set the PC up to access the domain. On W2K, it's My Computer/Properties/ Network Identification. Click on "Properties" and check Domain and enter the OSX PDC domain name. You will be asked to logon to the OSX server (admin) and after a long minute you should receive a message, "Welcome to XXXXXXX Domain". You will be prompted to reboot.

At the logon screen, enter a OSX username (long name or short name) / password. Make sure you enter the domain you wish to enter. If you don't see a "Log on to ________" box, select options and then select the domain. This should get you on the server.

To verify, open My Computer and you should have a H: drive assigned with the shortname of the user you signed on as. "

______

More detailed information comes from the File Services Administration manual from Apple on pages 55 - 72 :

"Changing General Settings
You can use the General pane of the Windows service settings in Server Admin to
provide a server description, name, and workgroup and specify the server’s role in its domain.
To configure Windows service General settings:
1 Open Server Admin and select Windows in the Computers & Services list.
2 Click Settings, then click General.
3 To specify how your server participates in the local domain, choose from the Role popup menu.
4 In the Description field, type a description that is meaningful to you or your users.
This description appears in the Network Neighborhood window on client computers,
and is optional.
The Description cannot exceed 48 characters.
5 In the Computer Name field, type the server name you want users to see when they
connect.
The default name is the NetBIOS name of the Windows file server. The name should
contain no more than 15 characters, and no special characters or punctuation.
If practical, make the server name match its unqualified DNS host name. For example, if your DNS server has an entry for your server as “server.apple.com,” give your server the name “server.”
6 In the Workgroup field, type the name of the workgroup that you want users to see in the Network Neighborhood window.
If you have Windows domains on your subnet, use one of them as the workgroup
name to make it easier for clients to communicate across subnets. Otherwise, consult
your Windows network administrator for the correct group name.
The workgroup name cannot exceed 15 characters.

From the Command Line
You can also change the Windows service settings by modifying the serveradmin
command in Terminal. For more information, see the file services chapter of the
command-line administration guide.

PAGE 60:
"Changing Advanced Settings
You can use the Advanced pane of the Windows service settings in Server Admin to
choose a client code page, set the server to be a workgroup or domain master browser,
specify the server’s WINS registration, and enable virtual share points for user homes.
To configure Windows services Advanced settings:
1 Open Server Admin and select Windows in the Computers & Services list.
2 Click Settings, then click Advanced.
3 Choose the character set you want clients to use from the Code Page pop-up menu.
4 Next to Services, choose whether to enable domain browsing services.
“Workgroup Master Browser” provides browsing and discovery of servers in a single subnet.
“Domain Master Browser” provides browsing and discovery of servers across subnets.
5 Next to WINS Registration, choose how you want the server to register with WINS.
Choose “Off” to prevent your server from registering itself with any external WINS
server or local name resolution server.
Choose “Enable WINS server” to have the file server provide local name resolution
services. This allows clients across multiple subnets to perform name/address
resolution.
Choose “Register with WINS server” if your Windows clients and Windows server are not
all on the same subnet, and your network has a WINS server. Then enter the IP address
or DNS name of the WINS server.
6 To simplify setting up share points for Windows user home directories, select “Enable virtual share points.”
When you enable virtual share points, home directories are mounted automatically
when Windows users log in to the server, without you having to set up individual share points for each of your users.

From the Command Line
You can also change the Windows service settings using the serveradmin command
in Terminal. For more information, see the file services chapter of the command-line
administration guide."

Page 64
"Enabling Domain Browsing
If there are no Microsoft servers on your subnet or network to control domain
browsing, you can use these options to restrict domain browsing to a single subnet or
allow browsing across your network.
To enable domain browsing:
1 Open Server Admin and select Windows in the Computers & Services list.
2 Click Settings, then click Advanced.
3 Next to Services, select Workgroup Master Browser, Domain Master Browser, or both.
Select Master Browser to let clients browse for and locate servers in a single subnet.
Select Domain Master Browser to let clients browse for and locate servers across your
network (subnets).
4 Click Save."

Page 67 - HOW TO CONNECT USING WINDOWS NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD:
"Connecting to the Server Using Network Neighborhood
Before trying to connect to the server from a Windows client computer, find out the
workgroup or domain of both the client computer and the file server.
You can find the workgroup name of a Windows client computer in the computer’s
Network Neighborhood window. To find the server’s workgroup name, open Server
Admin, click Windows in the Computers & Services list, click Settings, then click
General.
To connect to a Windows server using the Network Neighborhood:
1 On the Windows client computer, open the Network Neighborhood window. If you are
in the same workgroup or domain as the server, skip to step 4.
2 Double-click the Entire Network icon.
3 Double-click the icon of the workgroup or domain the server is located in.
4 Double-click the server’s icon.
5 Log in using your Windows login name.
Connecting to the Server by Name or Address in Windows
You can connect to the Windows server by double-clicking its name in the Network
Neighborhood. We currently use a customized FileMaker Pro Database (made using Filemaker Pro 3.0). We have mixed databases and clients and we need to move up to at least 5.0 because the Windows 2003 server cannot handle the 3.0 - 4.0 versions without crashing. Most of our client computer user's needs do not include the full install of FileMaker Pro, so we are hoping that we can create a solution that will allow us to make a mini-program where the information can be updated and posted onto the server. We do not currently have a WAN, so the server solution will not be necessary yet. Based on this link, I am going to purchase a 5-pack of File Maker Pro 6.0 for current users and File Maker Pro Developer 7.0.

Dent du Midi - MIDI File Converter for GarageBand

Dent du Midi - MIDI File Converter for GarageBand: http://homepage.mac.com/beryrinaldo/ddm/

This program allows you to convert midi files into separate tracks for each instrument type. I have resolved this issue with the upgrade of the new Panther server for email. I added the WebDav module and then set up a share point in /Library/WebServer/Documents/ called webdav . I set up webdav by going to Server Admin / Web / Settings / Options and then clicked on WebDav and clicked save. Then I went back through Server Admin to Web / Settings / Realms and set up a new realm that pointed to my /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav directory. Once that was set up, I added users that could browse and / or author. I took off the default "Everyone" so that a password would be required to see the folder listing of the webdav directory. Finally, I found a note in the web services documentation that you have to manually change the permissions on the webdav folder to be have owner as www with read / write privileges.

Once that was all set up, I connected in a couple of ways:

1. Finder / Connect to Server / and entered http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/ to access the folder that way.

2. Go to Safari and enter http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/ this will ask you to log on and then take you to the directory.

3. Go to iCal, click on a calendar you want to publish, and then click on Calendar in the menu / and then click on Publish - for the path - enter: http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/ , choose the options that you want and then click Publish. To see an image of the setup dialog box, go to http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/icalsetup.pdf

4. To access the folder via Windows, go to Network Places, add a new network place, enter the path: http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/ and then click on Finish. You will have to enter your login and password. You can then save your calendar from Outlook as a web page, by going to File / Save as web page / navigate to the webdav network place you just added and then set up the options as you wish. Click on Save. To access your calendar, just go to http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/ and then the name you gave the file with .html on the end.

This is very cool! I uploaded my calendar to http://mail.haddon.k12.nj.us/webdav/lhill082004.html . Correction was implemented as stated below from this web site:

"The issue happens if the Apache environment includes definitions for SSL related settings while the server is not actually running via SSL. This can occur when the Web server is restarted via Server Admin. To resolve the issue, execute these two commands in Terminal:

# sudo apachectl stop

# sudo apachectl start"

This corrected the problem!
